Before moving here to Auckland we had been living in Costa Rica for a year. This has been a much easier move for us (though much more expensive than we budgeted), things are much easier when you know the language. Though, I must admit there are certain sayings and accents that are hard for me to understand. There are a lot of South Africans, English and Irish (among other English accents) that also throw some difficulties into the understanding English conversations. You are completely right though, baby steps.
